FLOW đź•Š In my first career in International Shipping, the work environment was stressful and fast paced. Interruptions were constant. Multi-tasking and putting out fires were part of the daily grind. Nothing flowed. In my second career as a Massage Therapist and Cranial Sacral Therapist, I discovered something called 'flow.' The bodywork and energy work flowed; one client at a time, one healing session at a time. No interruptions, no stress, no multi-tasking, no fires to put out.The spiritual life, life in the Spirit flows gently and quietly in the life of a believer. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, the Spirit of love manifests itself in a constant and steady manner in the life of a soul that listens, ponders and discerns. It takes awareness and self-discipline to be present to the movement of the Holy Spirit in one's life. Distractions, external and internal chatter must be eliminated in order to experience the gentle dance of the Holy Spirit.Examine your life. Do you experience flow in your life, or do you allow all sorts of distractions to assail you left and right? Do you look constantly at your phone? Do you spend an excessive amount of time on social media? Do you tend to be argumentative or confrontational? What are your priorities in life? Do you know your purpose in life? Are you aware of God's plan for your life? There is a difference between living and surviving. Are you living or simply surviving between various tasks and distractions? Living is actively cooperating with the flowing movement of the Holy Spirit in one's life, receiving its gifts and using them in service of God and the Church, according to His plan for one's life. Surviving is hardly existing. Which do you choose?#catholic #faith #life #flow #balance #peace #holyspirit

BENEDICTINE REFLECTION BY ABBOT JOEL RIPPINGER, OSB, MARMION ABBEYPENTECOST SUNDAY - MAY 19People are surprised when I tell them that Pentecost is my favorite liturgical feast. Yes, I recognize the central and theologically decisive position of Easter and I will put myself in the ranks of those whose fondness for the faith-centered elements of Christmas is second to none.Yet there is something about the event of Pentecost that has always spoken deeply to my personal faith life. One of the reasons for that is my felt need for the Holy Spirit, along with the manner in which the gifts of the Spirit have been a life support for me throughout my more than half-century as monk and priest. How can one describe the power and the presence of the Spirit?St. Luke in our first reading saw it as a rushing wind and tongues of fire.I prefer the image given by St. Basil the Great, who likened the Spirit to the rays of sunshine in the earth’s atmosphere. They shine, he says on the entire world, yet they are enjoyed by each person as if they were intended for that person alone. The great French theologian, Fr. Yves Congar, says that the Spirit is present in all things, subtle and sovereign. My experience has been that we have no control as human beings over when and how the Spirit is made manifest, but we do have an obligation to discern and affirm its presence when we sense its power.Among the ways of discerning those gifts is the capacity to see the fruits of the spirit at work. These fruits are spelled out in our second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians and summarized so well by the greeting Jesus gives to the apostles in the upper room in our Gospel: “Peace be with you.” When we truly allow ourselves to be temples of the Holy Spirit, we will embody that fruit of peace and set in motion the fruits of patience, generosity, and gentleness. That requires on our part a mindfulness that the Spirit is poured out on us not for the benefit or prestige of those receiving it, but for the building up, the edification, of the body of Christ. That brings us back to the message that is so prominent a part of this “birthday” of the Church: “When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.”In this telling verse from the Acts of the Apostles, Luke reminds us of the two essential properties of the Spirit’s presence. The first is community. Mary and the first followers of Jesus were in the upper room together. When the Spirit is present throughout the Book of Acts it is always in the context of people who have gathered. The second essential aspect of the Spirit is unity. They were gathered in that one place because the Spirit is a source of unity and cohesiveness, unlike the divisiveness of the devil.God’s Church, we know, has never been without the need for the presence of the Holy Spirit. The peace and harmony that come in its wake are gifts we long for now more than ever.#catholic #faith #church #pentecost

EASTER WEEK BETWEEN ASCENSION AND PENTECOSTIF I DO NOT GO AWAY, THE COMFORTER WILL NOT COME TO YOUBY SAINT CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA, EGYPTAfter Christ had completed his mission on earth, it still remained necessary for us to become sharers in the divine nature of the Word. We had to give up our own life and be so transformed that we would begin to live an entirely new kind of life that would be pleasing to God. This was something we could do only by sharing in the Holy Spirit. It was most fitting that the sending of the Spirit and his descent upon us should take place after the departure of Christ our Savior. As long as Christ was with them in the flesh, it must have seemed to believers that they possessed every blessing in him, but when the time came for him to ascend to his heavenly Father, it was necessary for him to be united through his Spirit to those who worshiped him, and to dwell in our hearts through faith. Only by his own presence within us in this way could he give us confidence to cry out, ABBA, FATHER, make it easy for us to grow in holiness and through our possession of the all-powerful Spirit, fortify us invincibly against the wiles of the devil and the assaults of men.Does this not show that the Spirit changes those in whom he comes to dwell and alters the whole pattern of their lives? With the Spirit within them it is quite natural for people who had been absorbed by the things of this world to become entirely other-worldly in outlook, and for cowards to become men of great courage. There can be no doubt that this is what happened to the disciples. The strength they received from the Spirit enabled them to hold firmly to the love of Christ, facing the violence of their persecutors unafraid. It was to their advantage for the Savior to return to heaven, his return was the time appointed for the descent of the Holy Spirit.#catholic #faith #easter #ascension #pentecost #holyspirit
