Abstract:

More than three quarters (76%) of the fantasty-prone college students (total N = 21) who scored in the upper 4% of the population on the Inventory of Childhood Memories and Imaginings (ICMI) [1] and who were administered a diagnostic interview met the criteria for either a past or present Axis I diagnosis according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [2] compared with 30% of medium fantasy prone students (total N = 20) who scored within 1/2 a standard deviation of the mean on the ICMI. Negative affectivity, as measured by the General Temperament Survey [3], was found to mediate the relation between fantasy and current Axis-I disorder, but not past Axis-I disorder. Whereas 5% of the medium fantasy prones received a dissociative disorder diagnosis, 33% of the fantasizers did so, with dissociative disorder not otherwise specified (DDNOS) constituting three quarters of the total dissociative diagnoses. Fantasizers also reported more dissociative experiences and more tenuous cognitive, affective, and attentional control than their non fantasy-prone counterparts. In general, the results provide confirmation of the findings of Rauschenberger and Lynn [4].

Abstract:

Philip Kindred Dick (1928–1982) przez 54 lata życia napisał przeszło 40 powieści i 200 opowiadań, w znakomitej większości utwory science fiction, osobne i niepodobne do utworów SF innych autorów.

Abstract:

This article explores fantastic encounters between humans and non-humans inChinese and Japanese Children’s literature. Naoko Awa’s collection of short storiesThe Fox’s Window and Other Stories is closely read to elucidate narrative features ofwhat I call as “strange encounter”, the magic realistic human-animal encounter inChinese and Japanese cultural context. Chinese supernatural literature and culturaltradition of yaoguai, which have been assimilated into Japanese culture (Japaneseyōkai), are referred to throughout my discussion. Todorov’s approach to thefantastic, Judith Zeitlin’s study of Strange Tales of Liaozhai Studio, and RosemaryJackson’s study of fantasy are drawn upon to illuminate the meaning of encountersbetween men and animals. I argue that magic realism as a relatively new genrefor young readers, not only reflects the author’s individual creative experienceof the fantastic but also partakes in the sense of an “other” reality that resonatesthroughout a cultural community.

Abstract:

When fantasy beats reality or when fantasy is so real that it seems that other worlds are possible contemporary fantasy arises within what is called postmodern literature. The notion of fantastic is to be seen as an agreement that we all adhere, as the boundaries between reality and fantastic are diluted, from the moment we begin to question the terms “extra-textual reality”, “fictional pact”, etc., reflecting so these alternative worlds that constitute the fantastic thing are a transcendency or a transgression of what we understand for reality. The basic aim of the present article will focus on theoretical considerations about how great have been occurring in recent years, and their adaptation in the tales of Patricia Esteban Erlés, specifically in her tales included in Azul ruso (2010) and Casa de muñecas (2012) where the fantastic, the real and the terrible are blurred and confused.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The objective of this research is to reveal Nawāl al-Sa’dāwī’s fantasy and to find out why she builds a fantasy of women’s autonomy in religious discourse as depicted in her latest novel, Zīnah. This study focuses on the concept of fantasy in Žižek's theory of subjectivity, which sees fantasy as a screen covering the lacks and inconsistencies of the shackling Symbolic. Fantasy is also an estuary of meaning that confirms the existence of a divided and dialectical subject that continues to move in search of self-fulfillment. The research method is hermeneutic, namely by interpreting the actions and fantasies of al-Sa’dāwī' as a subject. The analysis shows that al-Sa’dāwī’s fantasy is her realization of a transcendental humanist religious discourse which gives women full autonomy, internally and externally. Zīnah, the main character in the novel, is a symbol of this autonomy. Internally, Zīnah has been set free from the patriarchal shackles of religious discourses. Externally, Zīnah is able to change the structure and create a new humanist, transcendental, and progressive structure in religious discourse to liberate human beings. Zīnah is al-Sa’dāwī’s fantasy to cover up the lacks of The Symbolic, the estuary of meaning, and confirmation of her existence as a divided and dialectical subject.

Abstract:

The article is devoted to the problem of the transformation of the genre gene survey of instrumental fantasy in musical creativity of the 20th century. The research methodology is based on cultural and systemic approaches, which allows to present fantasy in several dimensions: ontological (philosophical meaning), pragmatic (genre structure) and interpretive (play with an invariant, original work, etc.), which is proven on individual examples. The scientific novelty of the study consists in presenting fantasy as a system that combines the ontological, communicative and interpretive nature of the genre. It was revealed that the ontological nature is revealed through structural, linguistic and dramaturgical signs of improvisation and freedom; genre (genre composition) through the basic indicator that combines freedom of presentation and development of the main musical material (theme, thematic complex, etc.); the communicative meaning appears to direct the attention of both the performer and the listener to the principle of creative freedom, or a certain “game”, which becomes the main idea in the work. Finally, the interpretive meaning is emphasized due to the presence of the type of “fantasy on themes”, re-intonation, combination of the fantasy genre with other genres, which is often noted by the author himself - sonata-fantasia, waltz-fantasia, quasi fantasia, etc., which is evidence of the work of fantasy as a principle of special “world perception” and “world creation” both by itself and based on established linguistic and dramaturgical norms of another genre.

Abstract:

This article offers a comprehensive review of W. Morris influence on the epic fantasy of J.R.R. Tolkien. The purpose of the research is to reflect how Morris tradition influenced the development of Tolkiens fantastic prose - which later formed a separate subgenre of epic fantasy - and the whole fantasy genre. The objectives of the study include tracing the history of the development of fantastic element in literature - which served as a basis for the works of both authors - and finding poetological similarities and differences between W. Morris and J.R.R. Tolkien. The comparative study is based on the works of V. Gopman and K. Massey as well as on the original writings of Morris and Tolkien. The result of the study is the justification for W. Morris as the natural literary precursor of Tolkien. Based on the influence and partial borrowing of Morris imagery and motifs, Tolkin develops the theoretical foundation for the genre of magical fairy tale, which will later be called fantasy.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The paper explores the possibility of classifying the Bible as a work of fantasy, or as a work including fantastic elements. It looks into the unique status of Biblical fantasy and the challenges to such a classification, including its literary features and presumption of ontological realism. The paper defines fantasy as a literary work whose content is characterized by surfeit or deviation to which no extra-textual ontological pretension is attributed. However, the argument goes beyond the ontological theme to stress the significance of the transcendent in both religious literature and fantasy. The Bible is viewed as fantasy in this sense and in some additional senses already within some of its own parts (such as Lamentation and Job). The paper studies these texts in this context and in relation to the theory of fantasy.

Abstract:

The Wizard of Oz is not only an iconic film but an iconic fantasy film. An unwillingness to describe it as such within film studies points to a long history of the fantasy genre’s critical neglect. Dissecting the intrinsically cinematic apparatus of space, this article will seek to demonstrate how The Wizard of Oz functions as a fantasy film. Specifically, it will scrutinise how the film attempts to elicit a positive and reassuring encounter with a sense of the magical that seems tied to the genre’s unique aesthetic pleasures. As the film demarcates a mimetic sense of reality, Kansas, from another magical space wherein the fantasy elements of the narrative takes place, Oz, its sense of space hesitates between a sense of the real and the unreal in a manner similar to that originally described in Tzvetan Todorov’s The Fantastic. The Wizard of Oz would seem to operate a similarly fantastic sense of space, constructing a relationship between the two realms that oscillates between the virtues of both as it celebrates the values of the homely and the otherworldly, the familiar and the new in order that it might mitigate its potential traumas and showcase its joys.

Abstract:

This article attempts to explore the use of fantasy in literature and how it has attained the position of a literary category in the twentieth century. This work also concerns how as the form literature, it functions between wonderful and imitative to combine the elements of both. The article reveals that wonderful represents supernatural atmospheres and events. The story-telling is unrealistic which represents impossibility as it creates a wonderland. In the imitative or the realistic mode, the narrative imitates external reality. In it, the characters and situations are ordinary and real. Fantasy in literature does not escape the reality. It occurs in an interdependent relation to the real. In other words, the fantastic cannot exist independently of the real world that limits it. The use of fantastic mode in literature interrupts the conventional artistic representation and reproduction of perceivable reality. It embodies the reality and transgresses the standards of literary forming. It normally includes a variety of fictional works which use the supernatural and actually natural as well. The developers of fantasy fiction are fairy tales, science fiction about future wars and future world. A major instinct of fantastic fiction is the violence threatened by capitalist violation of personality that is spreading universally.

Abstract:

Hobbes and Butler both conjure images of an abandoned infant in their respective discussions of vulnerability. Leviathan uses this image to discuss original dominion, or natural maternal right over the child, while for Butler rights discourse produces fantasies of invulnerability that derealize other lives. However, Hobbes’s infant in nature has no rights and can only consent to being nourished. Only when able to nourish itself can it claim rights to transfer through the covenant producing a fantasy of individual invulnerability. Vulnerability in the state of nature and the commonwealth’s fantasy of invulnerability are together a counter-fantasy to the fantasies of invulnerability of Hobbes’s time, through heaven or eternal glory. In question is whether Butler, in her reimagining of community, is, like Hobbes, producing a fantasy, but a meta-fantasy that community can be taken as fantasy without derealizing the fantastic or that fantasizes an honesty about its being fantasy.

Abstract:

As the genre of fantasy literature continues to grow, new authors strive to innovate and stray from the traditional principles that ruled it for many decades when epic fantasy was more prominent. Though epic features still remain a great part of the genre, the characteristics that rule fantasy worlds, stories, and characters have changed over time, bringing new aspects into the fold and introducing new voices. As academics attempt to categorize a genre as diverse as fantasy to better understand it and define it, authors continue to expand and mingle fantasy elements with components from other genres, especially science-fiction. The aim of this article is to identify how a taxonomy of fantasy can be used to understand the relation between the fantastic and the narrative. By analyzing N. K. Jemisin’s novels in the Broken Earthtrilogy throughFarah Mendlesohn’s categorization of fantasy proposed in Rhetorics of Fantasy(2008), the goal is to discover the aspects in which Jemisin brings innovation into the fantasy genre by applying elements from various categories.

Abstract:

In children's fantasy, invisibility is a popular motif, typically achieved by using different magic items. Invisibility also serves an important role in feminist discourses of femininity and power. In feminist theory, invisibility has been used to describe the status of females in patriarchal systems, while in fantastic texts invisible females have often literally served as the monstrous Others. However, invisibility has also been seen as a form of empowerment, particularly in fantastic contexts where it can be interpreted both literally and metaphorically. To open up and explore these questions, this article examines the feminist discourses of invisibility, femininity and power in two British children's fantasy novels: The Time of the Ghost (1981) by Diana Wynne Jones and The Ghost Drum (1987) by Susan Price .

Abstract:

Fantasy has played a crucial role in shaping literature since time immemorial. Yet , proper syste matic work on fantasy has not been done until the last century, when scholars began to realize its importance and give it due recognition. First published in 1970, Tzvetan Todorov’s The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Lirerary Genre represents one of the touchstones of critical work on the fantastic genre. His pioneering ideas have inspired literary critics worldwide to deve lop their own premises on the genre, some of which bear Todorov’s indelible imprints. This essay attempts to chart how Todorov constructs his paradigm by means of his structuralist standpoint and how later critics, such as Christine Brooke-Rose and Rosemary Jackson, respond to his theoretical postulate. The main objective of this essay is to investigate how these theoretical dialogues, with Todorov’s model of the fantastic genre functioning as an axis, shed light on a complex notion of genre as dynamic institution, which needs to be resilient enough to accommodate changes and in turn prescriptive enough to be the guideline for readers and writers alike.

In 2010, David Waddington published a paper in Studies in Philosophy of Education entitled “Troublesome Sentiments: The Origins of Dewey’s Antipathy to Children’s Imaginative Activities.” In this article, Waddington embarks on a genealogical account of Dewey’s “apparent hostility toward children’s imaginative pursuits.” (p. 351). This paper extends and refines Waddington’s argument, arguing that the distinction between fantasy and creative imagination is an important one to understanding Dewey. I conclude that Dewey’s antipathy is really focused on fantasy. This antipathy extends throughout much of his educational, psychological, and aesthetic work. Dewey’s distain for fantasy rests on his arguments about the creative and productive purposes of thought and activity. He feels that fantasy, dealing with the unreal and overly emotional aspects of thought, is unproductive and, occasionally, dangerous. I argue that this is an underestimation of fantasy, one that rests on a conflation of fantasy as an activity with the fantastic as subject matter. I argue that Dewey underestimates fantasy, demonstrating that it might serve the moral and aesthetic purposes that drive his account of imagination.

Abstract:

The structural functioning and purpose of the fantastic in Glubkes oordeel, especially in the ‘Last Judgement’ description, is scrutinized in this article. The protagonist, Glubke, find s himself in a psychological labyrinth as a result of an Oedipal conflict, and this gives rise to his flight of fantasy. The reader enters the realm of Glubke's mind by means of the fantastic and the fantastic enables the abstract author to give a dramatic artistic representation of Glubke’s chaotic spirit and his reclusion. The damnation scene is an externalization of the inner life of an arch-outsider and in this scene the fantastic becomes the dominant mode of discourse. Brakman’s comprehensive range of linguistic effects allows him to achieve the fantastic dimension to excellent effect.

Abstract:

The paper seeks to explore the concept of the secondary world as developed in Susanna Clarke’s 2020 fantasy novel Piranesi. The analysis is conducted in the context of the evolution of the literary motif of fairy abduction between the classic medieval texts and its current incarnations in modern speculative fiction. The argument relates the unique secondary world model found in Clarke’s novel to the extensive intertextual relationship Piranesi has with the tradition of portal fantasy narratives, and discusses it in the context of the progressive cognitive internalisation of the perception of the fantastic which has taken place between the traditional medieval paradigm and contemporary fantasy fiction.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to show how contemporary children’s fantasy fiction offers alternative methods to children and teenagers for confronting real-life issues, such as self-discovery, sense of belonging and the process of individuation, through the analysis of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. In his contemporary children’s fantasy book, Gaiman empowers his protagonist to explore her sense of self, overcome her insecurities and fears in a fantastic mirror-like home. This paper argues that fantasy is an effective device for explaining the complexities and dilemmas of the self and examining a child’s quest for self-discovery in the process of maturation and individuation.

Abstract:

The intrusion of the Fantastic in the New Algerian Writings: the case of the novels of Djamel Mati This contribution aims at questioning the way with which the Algerian Writer D. Mate introduces the fantastic in the diegetic universe inclined to the phantasmagorias of the tormented lucubration’s of the characters in quest of themselves. In this perspective, the Writer elaborates a new interactive and dynamic relationship between the moving and chimerical spatiality’s of "point B114" and the fantastic lucubration’s of atypical characters on the reading of "Sweet-sour, the lucubration’s of a tormented mind" and "It looks like the South". The researcher attempts to show how such dynamics is elaborated in the wake of a new Algerian writing of dreams and delirium, the liberation of forms and senses through a singular fantasy with innovative scriptural mechanisms to showtheir philosophical and ontological nature, consubstantial with the human condition. In conclusion, we will say that the fantastic is omnipresent in the phantasmagorical diegetic universe by the multiplication of hallucinatory, strange and inexplicable phenomena experienced by the tormented characters in search of themselves. However, Mati's scriptural aesthetic does not content itself with "threading" them in the narrative continuum: it draws eclecticly from other codes of the fantastic, ranging from the strange inexplicable to that of the disturbing Freudian strangeness to establish a sort of dismantling of time and space opening up to infinity in a supernatural dreamlike timelessness that escapes the classical spatio-temporal benchmarks (space, duration, dating). In Mati, the "raw" fantasy is not introduced into a world where enchantment goes without saying, it is the fruit of hallucinations, daydreams and dreamlike delusions of characters inclined to systematically consume sweet and sour pills and hookahs stuffed with Indian hemp. The intrusion of an eclectic and hybrid fantasy into a composite conglomeration of hallucinatory micro-narratives allows the expression of an existential malaise which the wandering characters seeks to circ*mscribe through strange and inexplicable experiences. Finally, the intrusion of a fantastic singular invades in an original and singular way the entire surface of the text through the excrescences of the hallucinatory dream, of the oneiric fabulation and refers implicitly to the impalpable ontological mystery which privileges the questioning of the human condition and the entity of being.

Abstract:

In the essay Science fiction: a hopeless case - with exceptions, Stanisław Lem spoke negatively about science fiction (but also about its authors and fans), proving its secondary nature and entanglement in market laws, pointing out the lack of reliable criticism from outside the fandom and flattering the tastes of recipients who only seek entertainment in literature. The author of Solaris included science fiction in the “lower kingdom” of literature, contrasting it with mainstream (“upper kingdom”). Thus, he symbolically strengthened the division into the fantastic “ghetto” and mainstream literature.Jacek Dukaj also spoke about science fiction in a slightly less categorical tone. In the essay Krajobraz po zwycięstwie, czyli polska fantastyka AD 2006 [Landscape after victory, or Polish fantasy AD 2006], the author of Ice noticed similar problems that Lem had seen in the past (lack of external criticism, lack of ambition, stagnation and reluctance of SF writers to go beyond plot and language patterns, flattering fashions and treating science fiction prose only as entertainment literature); however, unlike Lem, he seemed to be interested in the fate of his environment and proposed specific solutions that could raise the rank of science fiction.

Abstract:

On the Translation of Fantasy Literature through the Lens of the Italian Version of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher Series Studies on the specific features of fantasy literature that can influence translation strategies are becoming more and more widespread among scholars, as a consequence of increasing interest in the rendition of cultural items and the legitimation of fantasy literature as a field of research. Focusing on the Italian version of The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski, published in 2010–2016, the article investigates the problems posed by the creation of imaginary worlds and the form of literary cycles as distinctive traits of fantasy literature, as suggested by Guttfeld (2012). The author shows how they can affect cultural and lexical consistency in the translation of anthroponyms, toponyms, units of measurement, culinary terms, and fantastic creatures. Whereas in Polish translations of fantasy texts a foreignizing strategy prevails, due to the domination of anglophone writers and the imbalance of cultural systems, the Italian translation of Sapkowski’s works appears significantly more domesticated.

Abstract:

This study looks into the dynamics of fantasy in the so-called telepantasya or pantaserye, particularly in how it uses the concept of space. It shows how the worlds of reality and fantasy are differentiated in these locally-produced television series. Encantadia and Majika on GMA 7, and Super Inggo and Da Adventures of Pedro Penduko on ABS-CBN 2 are analyzed for this purpose. An in-depth analysis of these shows leads the writer to conclude that there are many elements of “fantastic narratives” adapted from the West, particularly the dichotomy between reality and fantasy. This dichotomy is not found in Philippine mythology, where the “mysterious” (kababalaghan) coexists with and impinges on the real.

Starting with a reconstruction of the views of philosophers and aesthetes on the topic of fantastic images, the Author aims to characterize fantasy art. She describes the reception of this art in Poland, characterizes its determinants, and defines the trend, indicating the most important examples of artistic works. While exploring this approach, she refers to Waldemar Okoń, Jerzy Malinowski, Tomasz Gryglewicz, and Antoni Smuszkiewicz. The convention of fantasy art appears to be a vital, developmental quality, an expression of the rebellion of consciousness against simplifications.
